At the end of Iolanthe, Private Willis and all the peers "magically" sprout wings. It took some effort to achieve this effect, but the response of the audience made it all worthwhile. How was it done? Briefly, the wing assembly is affixed with Velcro to the back of Willis and each peer, just prior to their final entrance. The wings are folded down, out of sight of the audience, until a fairy behind Willis (or a peer) pulls a string to release the wings, which are pulled into the "up" position by elastic cords.
